The symposium was inspired by Erri de Luca’s recent rewriting of Sindbad’s journey: “The lucky adventurer of the Thousand and One Nights was too far away from my years and seas. […] I wrote a Mediterranean Sindbad instead, a sailor more sleepless than mortal, a contemporary of Jonah’s Sea, the prophet who was swallowed alive by a whale, the sea of 19th century Italian immigrants that were swallowed alive by the Americas.” The seminar’s goal is to reflect and discuss on Mediterranean journeys, cities, and memories.

Il simposio prende spunto dalla riscrittura che Erri de Luca ha recentemente offerto del viaggio di Sindbad: “Il fortunato avventuriero delle Mille e Una Notte era troppo lontano da me di anni e mari. Ho scritto invece un Sindbad del Mediterraneo, un marinaio più insonne che mortale, coetaneo del mare di Giona, il profeta inghiottito vivo dalla balena, e del mare degli emigranti italiani del millenovecento, inghiottiti vivi dalle Americhe” (L’ultimo viaggio di Sinbad, Einaudi, 2003) Scopo del seminario è soffermarsi a discutere e riflettere sul viaggio, sulle città del Mediterraneo, sulla ‘memoria’.
